The Significance of Excellent Customer Experience
Highlighting our 2023 CX Impact of the Year Award winners.
In late 2023, NRG celebrated the fifth year of our employee-nominated Customer Experience (CX) Awards. These accolades honor employees across our organization who exemplify our mission to power a brighter future together with our customers. One of the categories, the prestigious CX Impact of the Year award, recognizes individuals who demonstrate resourcefulness and innovation above organizational expectations – in other words, those who go above and beyond for their customers.
This year, the Impact award was given to two such individuals for their outstanding contributions. Sid Evans and Tom Gibson not only exceeded expectations, but within their roles have redefined the standard of customer engagement through their unwavering commitment to their customer base, aligning seamlessly with our Customer Experience goals. Their collective efforts reflect a rare blend of expertise, innovation, and an innate understanding of customer needs, setting a benchmark for excellence within our company. As we delve into their stories, it becomes evident that Sid and Tom are driving our commitment to unparalleled customer satisfaction to new heights.
Sid Evans, Senior Advisor for Business Affairs with Reliant, an NRG Energy brand, brings a true dedication to community relations and marketing, becoming the face of our brand beyond Texas. He actively engages with communities, embodying our company's commitment to giving back. Sid's involvement includes participating in local chambers of commerce, volunteering on boards of directors, collaborating with charities, attending numerous networking events, and even participating in holiday parades. His philosophy revolves around earning the community's trust before seeking their business, and he invests a significant amount of personal time to forge deep connections.
When not out in the field, Sid dedicates his workdays to evaluating requests from various charities, meticulously assessing their missions and needs. He collaborates seamlessly across PR, media, and legal teams to ensure every detail is carefully addressed. Sid brings a wealth of experience in non-profit work to his role, having served as Director of Membership Development for Houston First and as President of the Galleria Chamber of Commerce (the first Black President of a Houstonian Chamber). There, he learned the valuable lessons of asking questions and building genuine relationships. This understanding of the importance of a robust personal network has led him to offer his colleagues over the years a training course in effective networking called, “How To Work a Room – Top 100 Tips on Networking.”
Born on an Air Force base in Arizona, Sid's roots are deeply connected to achievement and service—his father was the first African American CPA in the state of Arizona. Sid earned his degree in Business Management from Stephen F. Austin State University and currently resides in Sugar Land, Texas, with his wife, Dr. Sheryl Evans, M.D, a noted psychiatrist, whom he credits for holding down the fort with their dogs while he tirelessly works to strengthen community bonds. Sid cannot thank Leanne Schneider, his supervisor, and the rest of his teammates enough for all of their support!
Tom Gibson, a Senior Client Strategist with NRG Business, embodies a multifaceted approach to customer relations. With a primary focus on working with large commercial and industrial customers, Tom plays a pivotal role in helping formulate hedging strategies, providing market intelligence, and delivering customized reporting to shield customers from unexpected market fluctuations. Tom describes himself as "sticky " in his customer interactions, his team’s way of defining both loyalty and tenaciousness in working with their customers. He aims not only to sell services but to foster indispensable relationships, thereby creating brand loyalty. His goal is to weave technical expertise with interpersonal connections, working hand in hand with customers to navigate the intricacies of the energy market.
A typical day for Tom involves engaging in strategy calls with customers, preparing market intelligence reports and customer-specific analyses, and collaborating with the sales teams to onboard new customers seamlessly. Tom's journey in energy began when he worked for a consulting firm, where he developed a passion for contributing to customers' success. His philosophy centers on providing clients the tools needed to make informed energy decisions and mitigate risks. Knowing that his insights have direct impact on the decisions his customers make, he prioritizes building trust and rapport, which are paramount to the customer having faith in the data and perspective he provides.
Hailing from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Tom brings a wealth of knowledge and a B.A. in history from Saint Vincent College to his role. His deep interest in Early American history, reflected in his thesis on Founding Father George Washington, underscores his appreciation for wise and considered counsel. Tom expresses gratitude to his supervisor Andy Vance for the nomination and for placing him in a position to exceed expectations, showcasing his commitment to ongoing excellence in serving our customers.
NRG is proud to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sid Evans and Tom Gibson for their unwavering dedication, exemplary work, and the inspiring example they set. We firmly believe a culture of acknowledgment and support among our teams translates into exceptional customer experiences. We look forward to next year's nominations and invite readers to explore the list of our other 2023 winners here.
