AI’s Place in the Energy Revolution


With search engines, translation tools, image recognition, traffic prediction, and Alexa, Bixby, and Siri, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a resident of our daily lives.  From the news to social media, from government to industry, AI has taken center stage as the implications around what it may help us achieve and how it may impact our society becomes everyday discourse.

Within the energy industry, we are grappling with similar conversations. AI is still a growing and evolving technology, one we are adopting and employing to improve operations and positively impact how customers engage with us and our services.

Technological Evolution

As electricity demand grows and decarbonization efforts increase, there is an ever-growing need for smart and powerful tools and technologies. With generative AI and machine learning models becoming more prevalent and advanced, the energy industry is looking to harness AI's power to transform how we operate in areas such as enhancing efficiencies, reducing costs, and integrating renewable energy sources.

The vast amount of data available within energy systems (generators, plants, and consumption) makes AI an exciting new frontier. Adopting AI and other technologies could help support a more modernized, efficient, and resilient industry. When looking to the future, it is easy to see the role this technology will have in areas such as forecasting, optimization, energy management, energy efficiency, and much more within the energy industry.

Baby Steps

Though in various stages of maturity, the energy industry is experimenting with AI in multiple areas, such as

  • Predictive Maintenance: Analyzing data from sensors and plants, companies are testing AI tools to predict equipment failures before they occur, reducing downtime and costs.
  • Supply and Demand Predictions: Evaluating usage demand and potential sources of supply, leading to more effective hedging strategies and better risk management.
  • Renewable Energy Integration: Forecasting weather conditions and alternative energy output.
  • Enhanced Customer Experience: Providing real-time information, handling inquiries, predicting bills, and offering the right products to the right customers based on their usage patterns.

With the inclusion of AI, energy companies will be able to fully utilize and benefit from available data and new technologies.

Considerations around “Fast” Adoption

However, we remain diligent even as we evaluate the benefits and capabilities that AI can bring to our sector. There are many risks that need to be considered as we scale AI technology, particularly (but not limited to) security, data privacy, legal issues, and hallucinations (accuracy and miscorrelations).

At NRG, our AI Center of Excellence team is keenly focused on developing a risk mitigation strategy as we move along our own AI journey.  The capabilities of AI are growing by the day, and the implications for the energy industry are promising, but energy’s status as a vital commodity and a crucial component of our infrastructure means we must prioritize governance, security, and control.
