GOAL

Help MetLife realize its sustainable vision by making solar power a reality.

SOLUTION

Implement a custom solar generating system with a programmable LED ring array.

A successful game plan

One of the NFL’s largest stadiums needed to reduce its carbon footprint. We came up with a creative energy solution with economic benefits.

Two teams. One stadium.

MetLife Stadium, home to both the New York Jets and New York Football Giants, sports a full, game-day seating capacity of 82,500. It’s also home to 20 games per season—more than any other in the league.

Since breaking ground in 2009, MetLife has been committed to reducing environmental impact, using recycled materials for construction and diesel fuel in the machinery. We joined the team to take their sustainable initiative.

A matchup of powerhouses

We’re one of the largest power generation companies in the U.S. and a leader in providing clean energy solutions to large business customers. Powering one of the largest venues in the league made perfect sense to us.

Our team of experts put their heads together for ways to reduce air pollution, conserve water and energy, improve waste management, and lessen MetLife Stadium’s environmental impact.

Coming full circle

We worked with vendors to design and build a custom solar power generating system—called the Solar Ring—that powers the stadium’s integrated LED lighting, display system, and everyday electricity needs.

It also adds a striking visual element to the top of the stadium: the Solar Ring has the ability to display team colors and an array of additional hues to support other visiting events, like concerts and college sports.

SUSTAINABILITY RESULTS

A game-changing endeavor

MetLife Stadium is the only sports facility in the U.S. to have its roof lined with solar panels.

But it’s not the lone arena supporting sustainability efforts. In addition to our successful work with MetLife, we installed solar solutions at the home of the Washington Redskins (FedExField), the San Francisco 49ers (Levi’s Stadium), the Houston Texans (NRG Stadium) and New England Patriots (Gillette Stadium). We also implemented a solar-powered display and wind-powered turbines for Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles

ENERGY FACTS

The ring of light

Our innovative solar generating system stretches a mile long.

The building-integrated photovoltaic panels (manufactured by Atlantis Energy Systems) generate about 350 kilowatts of energy—nearly 25 times the amount needed to power the LED display. Beyond powering the stadium’s daily energy needs, the energy can light up the ring when the sun goes down. Any excess power can go back into the grid.

We are pleased to team up with NRG, a company that possesses the power to improve our Stadium’s environmental impact. NRG provides the necessary skills and experience to execute this game-changing endeavor, which has a welcomed place at MetLife Stadium.”

BUSINESS CASE

An attractive impact

The Solar Ring helps MetLife Stadium meet a variety of initiatives.

In the words of Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets: “Our goal is to provide our fans with the best possible game-watching experience, one that is exciting, enjoyable, and environmentally conscious. Our partnership with NRG illustrates our commitment to this cause as we continue to explore eco-friendly initiatives to make MetLife Stadium the best in the world.”

"MetLife Stadium" is no stranger to unique, trendsetting innovation. The largest football stadium in the NFL also proudly displays the most technologically advanced infrastructure and exploration of new, cutting-edge eco-friendly ventures.”
