After realizing the 93-year-old hospital couldn't meet rising medical and technological expectations through renovation and expansion, a new facility known as University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro was conceived. Conventional energy choices however couldn't deliver the 100% reliability the new hospital would demand. In a line of work as critical as healthcare, every second counts. Doctors have enough to focus on, and trustworthy, consistent electricity should not be on their minds. So, the experts at the hospital looked to partner with experts in electricity.

Ambitious approach

The UMCPP facility required a reliable, efficient and continuous solution for its energy supply. The originally proposed solution, a conventional central utility plant for heating and cooling, fell short in terms of helping UMCPP reduce its environmental impact and operating costs. UMCPP needed an efficient solution that would allow it to stay focused on its primary mission of providing exceptional healthcare.

Self-sufficient solution

Instead of the conventional power solution, NRG Thermal had a better idea - a combined heat and power plant, known as a CHP, which provides highly reliable electricity, steam and chilled water. The new facility is completely energy self-sufficient, with the lowest net energy consumption and highest reliability available for a healthcare facility of this size.
