A Demand Response Program with Year-Round Incentives

Demand response (DR) has changed the way we view renewable energy. It’s a win-win solution where energy providers and users work together during times of critical stress, high electricity demand, or peak load times on the electric power grid. Companies that participate in a DR program agree to reduce energy consumption during peak periods of generation. In return, these companies earn revenue based on the amount of energy use they reduce.

As DR energy management solutions evolve in the competitive energy markets, the programs offered in each market continue to evolve. Case in point, the PJM market. On June 1, 2020, a significant adjustment to the region’s Capacity Performance offering was put in place, and PJM implemented the Capacity Performance program to meet evolving needs for capacity procurement. 

Capacity Performance refers to the requirement for power suppliers to ensure that they can provide a reliable source of electricity during critical times, such as blackouts due to extreme weather conditions or unexpected power plant outages. This mechanism is designed to encourage power generators and other resource providers to make necessary investments in their infrastructure and operations to guarantee their availability during periods of high demand. In essence, it is a contractual obligation that power suppliers enter into with the grid operator, promising to deliver power or face significant penalties for failing to meet these obligations. The goal is to enhance grid reliability by having enough resources on standby to respond promptly to demand spikes or unexpected outages, ensuring that electricity is available when consumers need it most.

Metering and power plants played a crucial role in enabling these reductions in electricity usage. Now, customers can provide either or both winter and summer reductions to save energy and reduce their overall electricity prices.

The annual Capacity Performance is now the sole load management demand response program offered by NRG in PJM. NRG manages a portfolio of customers with varying load reduction capabilities throughout the year to participate in the Capacity Performance annual program.  Here are some program details:

• Capacity Performance includes both the summer and winter periods, unlike Base Capacity, which has a summer-only incentive program
• Customers can provide either or both winter reduction and summer reduction during the applicable season:
  • Winter season:  November - April
  • Summer season:  June - October and the following May
• Depending on the season that the customer agrees to provide a load response, there are different obligation hours:
  • Winter hours – 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Summer hours – 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The program presents a year-round participation opportunity that allows customers to opt to provide varying levels of load reduction within each season. This means year-long rewards for implementing energy curtailment tailored for peak demand periods during summer or winter. This initiative encourages sustainability and contributes to clean energy initiatives and overall emission reduction.

Capacity Performance works the same way as all prior load management Demand Response programs — when stress is placed on the electric grid due to extreme electricity use or electricity consumption, participants are called upon by their Demand Response provider to reduce their energy usage.  Our program’s extended availability provides energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, increased reliability for the electric grid, and additional opportunities for customers to generate revenue and energy savings.
