Responding to an unplanned outage

Making sure the lights stay on for Texas homes and businesses requires a mix of technical know-how and innovative problem-solving, especially during peak demand. That expertise proved to be invaluable when W.A. Parish Unit 3, a gas-fired unit at NRG’s power plant near Houston, experienced a catastrophic failure.

The outage was caused when a key generator component broke down, putting the system’s recovery at risk and threatening to extend the outage. That’s when Parish Plant Senior Engineer Scott Barnett turned to NRG’s CRS for help getting the unit back online in time to meet high summer demand.

Restoring a key component to accelerate recovery and minimize downtime

The CRS team saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. They took ownership of restoring the generator component so the unit could return to service faster.

 

Led by CRS Manager, Maintenance Services David Martin and Engineer, Maintenance Services Matthew Bunting, a cross-functional team combined their deep industry experience and strategic insights to drive the effort forward.

 

Through hands-on coordination during installation, real-time issue resolution, and close attention to detail, they ensured a smooth integration of the restored component. Their work was instrumental in returning W.A. Parish Unit 3 to full operation.

 

In addition to their technical success, the team strengthened NRG’s proactive safety culture throughout the project by implementing a new QR code-based observation system.
